As of Friday Oct. 2, the Haunted Vault on Oakland Ave. is officially open to the public.

“I’m super excited,” said Scott Coates. “Last year, we had a good turnout, so we’re hopeful kids and their families will get excited and come out again this year.”

The Haunted Vault will be open every Friday and Saturday from 7-10 p.m. throughout the month of October.

From childhood, many of us have learned that the thrill of being frightened in a safe, controlled environment can be surprisingly exhilarating. Sharing that experience with others creates a special bond – when shrieks of fear turn into laughter. It’s this psychology of fear that Scott and Betsy Coates hope to harness this October, all for a good cause.

Communities and churches throughout the area invest tremendous effort and resources into raising the next generation of local citizens. The world can be a scary, confusing place, and young people today are learning to navigate its sometimes-haunting landscape. Area youth groups play a vital role in helping them find direction, develop resilience, and face life’s “jump scares” with courage and faith.

Partnering with several of these youth groups, the Coates have transformed the former First Northeast Bank of Nebraska, now known as The Vault of Oakland Avenue, into a haunted house – offering a night of controlled fright for a great purpose.

“Life can be scary at times,” Coates said. “There are so many unexpected things that can leave us confused and frightened. We want to help local youth groups financially as they guide young people through those challenges. And since it’s October, why not through a haunted house?”

The Vault located on Main Street in Oakland, opened its doors last weekend for a full month of spooky fun.

After exploring the haunted halls, visitors can unwind by playing cornhole and enjoying refreshments from the concession stand behind the building. All proceeds from the Haunted Bank will be shared with area youth groups at the end of the season. If you wish to help volunteer making the evening special, contact Scott Coates at 402.372.8062.
